This design for AFTRS, on a narrow site wedged between Broadway and the UTS Fairfax building, centres on concepts of broadcasting and projection. In what is essentially a ‘building within a building’, the theatres, lecture rooms and library are stacked in a periodic massing which echoes the dominating presence of the nearby UTS tower. This form is subsequently distorted by a standing wave, with a wavelength of tens of metres, consistent with radio broadcast frequencies.
The projection of the wavefront is continued in the line of film editing suites which hover over the main atrium void, which forms an internal pedestrian street connecting Jones and Wattle streets. The outer walls of the atrium are converging screens bordering Broadway and Jones Street, where the point of convergence marks the main entrance. Windows at ground level allow a visual connection between the street and the studio activities below. This scheme displays resonances with DCM’s winning 2009 competition entry for the UTS Information Sciences building on this site, which is indicative of convergent evolution in architectural responses to site. |
